Melbourne’s Flinders Lane was once the heart of the ‘rag trade’. Embracing this tradition, and with a family history of fashion, Tessuti Fabrics have arrived in Melbourne.
Located in the upper ground floor of 141 Flinders Lane (with the well-known button and needle sign so you know you are just where you should be) the store embraces the European Atelier style with cavernous space, plenty of natural light, the delightful antiquity of cast iron radiators gently heating the space, polished concrete floors, Persian rugs and fabric. Fabric, fabric, fabric. Missoni, Armani, Chanel to name just a few; then there are the local designer ends too.
So why did Tessuti open here? ‘Why wouldn’t you?’ is the response from owner Colette when talking about the stylish city which she believes abounds with creative talent. With four booming Sydney stores – each of them ‘destination shopping’ it seemed the time was right for this entrepreneur to launch down here.
Waxing lyrical about the opportunity to sell wools, tweeds and cashmeres, Colette has stocked the store with fabrics to drool over, fabrics for someone else to drool over; perky Japanese pattern books, notions, threads, stands of zips, linings and a wonderful refectory table complete with pews and baskets of European and Australian magazines to pour over whilst deciding just what to buy.
Open Monday to Saturday, with Saturday having a ‘much more relaxed feel’ this shop builds on the tradition of fine fabric, stunning designs and amazing spaces all located in this the ‘smart and funky’ Flinders Lane.

... Seriously, this place is dangerously good. Full up with designer ends in a superb range of colours, textures and fibres I was in sewing heaven. And the store is really nice too - very roomy and pleasant (in stark contrast to so many of my usual fabric haunts) and out of the hurly burly of the more heavily trafficked part of town. I might move in ...
